Squirrels do this all the time on the bird feeder in my backyard, which hangs on a pole sticking out of the ground. Sometimes they know the feeder off onto the ground, and have their way with the seed. Sometimes my son and I get a pince cone, cover it in peanut butter, coat with seed and hand with twine from hooks on the front of our house. They break the twine and run off with the pine cones!
He is actually an all-American-squirrel; I arrived in LA yesterday, and watching these guys is good for getting over the jet-lag. He’s an Eastern Fox Squirrel or monkey-faced squirrel: invasive to California. We moved the feeder from a tree (easy for them) to a position under the porch of the house – to give the birds a chance; but they’re too smart for that. The really clever bit comes before they reach the wire, requiring inverted shuffling for several feet on the woodwork with very little purchase. I’ll complete the sequence if I get shots of that.

I like the pine cone idea. Eat-in or take-away options!
