All rights reserved Tim Jones 2008.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Santa Barbara&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbnature.org\/\">Museum of Natural History <\/a>may be smaller than its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhm.ac.uk\/\">South Kensington<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhm.org\/\">Los Angeles<\/a> cousins, but its collections are comprehensive and its situation enviable .  Sitting atop a shady gully in a forest setting, the museum, like so much of the understated value in this city, nestles in suburban anonymity.  Through the front door, all the expected departments &#8211; from mineralogy to dinosaurs &#8211; spar off from a central courtyard.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_396\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-396\" style=\"width: 284px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/communicatescience.com\/zoonomian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/whale355.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-396\" src=\"https:\/\/communicatescience.com\/zoonomian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/whale355.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"284\" height=\"213\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-396\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Found on the Beach. All rights reserved Tim Jones 2008.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There is a complete blue whale skeleton in the front parking lot and a tranquil nature trial in the ajoining forest.  The current special exhibition is a collection of dinosaur finds from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Sereno\">Paul Sereno<\/a> and teams&#8217; dig in Africa, including whole skeletons which tangibly illustrate the simultaneous but geographically isolated (post <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pangaea\">Pangaean<\/a> break-up) evolution of Africa&#8217;s version of the T-Rex.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_393\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-393\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/communicatescience.com\/zoonomian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/nathissb355.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-393\" src=\"https:\/\/communicatescience.com\/zoonomian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/nathissb355.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Africa's T-Rex\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-393\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Africa&#39;s T-Rex. All rights reserved Tim Jones 2008.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I found the range of exhibits truly diverse and a little surprising, particularly with slices of Von Hagens&#8217;s &#8216;6 metre woman&#8217;, (on loan from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bodyworlds.com\/en.html\">Bodyworlds<\/a> in LA) suspended nearby a more traditional collection of 1920s stuffed mammals.
